On the Charter on empowerment of historically disadvantaged South Africans in the
mining sector:
SAMDA has been instrumental in the taskforce charged with reaching consensus of
critical issues, amongst them quanta and timeframes.
On developing capital markets for junior companies:
SAMDA has engaged the South African Reserve Bank in debate on current regulations
that inhibit junior mining companies' ability to raise capital outside South Africa,
and is poised to make representations to the Department of Finance for a more liberal
dispensation.
SAMDA has also interacted with financial institutions, both locally and internationally,
on mining finance for the junior sector.
A number of SAMDA's founding members have worked together with Billiton, Goldfields,
the Chamber of Mines, Government and the Industrial Development Corporation, amongst
others, on the Bakubung Initiative, from which has emerged the New Africa Mining
Fund, the principal focus of which will be the provision of capital to the junior
sector.
On export allocations for junior coal producers:
SAMDA participated in research into South African junior coal producers' export
needs and has subsequently lobbied successfully for an allocation to juniors of
Richards Bay Coal Terminal capacity.
On representation and promotion
SAMDA is represented in the Sector Partnership Committee chaired by the Director
General of Minerals and Energy, which addresses various industry issues. In addition,
it participates extensively in various mining conferences and other events.
